The validation of battery management systems (BMS) and cell monitoring electronics requires precise and reproducible test conditions. With its BMS tester, SMART TESTSOLUTIONS offers a cost-effective testing solution that enables the realistic simulation of cell voltages, balancing currents and fault scenarios. The system was developed for use in development, system integration, quality assurance and pre-production validation of battery and fuel cell systems.
At the heart of the BMS tester is the MCM IntelliSim cell voltage simulation module (MCM IS-U06AOI). It provides high-resolution voltages at the individual cell level, thereby enabling the validation of operational, limit and fault scenarios without the use of real battery cells. Communication takes place via the existing BMS interfaces, allowing the behaviour of the cell monitoring electronics to be analysed under realistic conditions.
In addition to pure cell simulation, the BMS tester supports the simulation of balancing currents and current sensors, as well as the targeted reproduction of typical fault scenarios. Circuit interruptions, short circuits and reverse polarity can be reproduced consistently, enabling a systematic evaluation of system behaviour. Furthermore, insulation faults can be simulated, and safety-critical functions such as emergency stop mechanisms or the HVIL safety chain can be reliably tested.
Another focus is on the validation of BMS algorithms and thermal management functions. By simulating active and passive balancing processes, as well as current sensors, NTC and PTC sensors, development and test teams can reliably validate key monitoring and control functions in a reproducible manner.
The system architecture is modular: depending on requirements, the BMS tester can be operated as a stand-alone solution or integrated into existing test environments, right up to HIL systems. Via CAN and Ethernet interfaces, as well as Python and XiL APIs, the system can be integrated into automated test sequences and hardware-in-the-loop environments.
